Check your actual location

Find the place you are now, not only your saved home location. Open any alert covering it and read the named places. Some products cover a defined storm area; others apply to counties or forecast zones. Different outlines can overlap.

Check the hazard and timing

Check what is expected, when the alert applies and what the issuer tells you to do. A warning can arrive before the hazard reaches you. Use that time to take the requested action rather than waiting to see dangerous weather.

An outline is not a moving storm track

The alert area describes the official product. It may be updated, replaced or cancelled as forecasters assess conditions. Do not assume the outline moves continuously with radar or that being just outside it means you are safe.

If the map or your location is unavailable

Use the alert’s text and named locations. Check the National Weather Service and local emergency messages directly. Keep another way to receive warnings so one failed map, phone or connection does not leave you without information.
