A watch means conditions favor a hazard. Review where you would shelter or how you would change plans. Make sure you can receive the next update. It does not mean every place in the watch area will experience the hazard.
Warning: take the stated action
A warning means a dangerous hazard is occurring, imminent or expected. Read when it applies. A tornado warning calls for immediate shelter; a winter storm warning may give time to change tomorrow’s travel plans. Do not wait for visible danger.
Advisory: adjust your plans
An advisory describes conditions below warning criteria that can still cause harm or disrupt travel. It does not mean harmless weather. Read the impacts, especially if your activity or health makes you more vulnerable.
Example: planning an outdoor event
During a thunderstorm watch, identify shelter and who will monitor updates. If a warning arrives, follow its instructions and the event’s shelter plan. Thunder itself is a reason to move inside, even if no warning has been issued.
