Decide whether travel can wait
Check road conditions and the forecast before leaving. Roads that look wet may be icy. If travel is necessary, clear snow and ice from the vehicle, take a charged phone and emergency supplies, and tell someone your route.
Carry enough to stay warm
Keep blankets, extra dry clothing, water, food and a phone charger within reach. Dress in loose layers. Outside, protect exposed skin, stay dry and avoid exhausting yourself while shoveling or pushing a vehicle.
If your vehicle becomes stranded
Stay with the vehicle rather than walking into blowing snow. Make yourself visible to rescuers and call for help. If you run the engine for heat, ensure the exhaust is clear of snow and allow ventilation; trapped exhaust can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
If your heat goes out
Close off unused rooms, reduce drafts and use warm clothing and blankets. Follow the safety instructions for any heating equipment. Decide where you can go if your home becomes too cold.
