Never drive onto a flooded road
Turn back when water covers the road. You cannot judge its depth, the current or whether the pavement is still underneath. A large vehicle is not protection against moving water. Never drive around a barricade.
Avoid walking through water
Moving water can knock a person down. Floodwater can hide sharp debris, chemicals and electrical hazards. Do not enter a flooded basement or room where water covers outlets or electrical cords.
Act while a safe route remains
Keep checking local warnings as water rises. Leave when officials direct you to evacuate. If you are camping or staying in a low area, move to higher ground promptly. Do not delay to protect belongings.
If rising water traps you
Move to the highest accessible safe point and call 911 or your local emergency number if possible. Do not attempt to cross moving water to reach another building. Tell responders where you are and follow their instructions.
