Adjust outdoor activity
Check AirNow before exercise or outdoor work. When it is smoky, postpone strenuous activity or choose a shorter, easier activity. Recheck later; an earlier reading may no longer describe the air you are breathing.
Make an indoor clean-air space
Use a portable air cleaner or suitable central-air filtration. Keep windows and doors closed while filtering if you can also keep the room cool. Avoid adding indoor pollution through candles, frying or vacuuming.
Keep your indoor space cool, too
A closed home can become too hot. If you cannot keep indoor air both cool and clean, seek a cleaner-air shelter or another cooled building with good filtration.
If you must be outside
Limit time and effort outside and take breaks in cleaner air. A well-fitting N95 respirator can reduce smoke-particle exposure; a cloth face covering does not provide that protection. Follow evacuation instructions when a fire threatens your area.
